    European Rabbit

    Oryctolagus cuniculus

    European rabbits have become widespread throughout Australia. Rabbits are believed to have contributed to the decline in numbers of many native plants and animals. It is illegal to keep rabbits of any description in Queensland.

    In urban areas of South East Queensland, rabbits are responsible for:

    • Damaging gardens, shrubs and lawns
    • Competing with native fauna for food
    • Creating a primary source of soil erosion
    • Excavating under house/shed foundations and creating expensive repairs
